This guide shares general information from my experience working with people who quit gutka, khaini, zarda and pan masala. It is not medical advice. If you have an ulcer that does not heal in about two weeks, white or red patches, difficulty opening your mouth, or ongoing stomach problems, please see a dentist or doctor.
Quick answer
When you stop gutka, khaini or zarda, the first few days usually bring restlessness, irritability, an empty or restless jaw, cravings after meals and chai, and for many people difficulty passing motion in the morning. These feelings are the body and mind adjusting. They come in waves and, for most people, ease over the following weeks.
Roman Hindi mein: gutka chhodne ke baad bechaini, chidchidapan aur subah pet saaf na hona aam baat hai. Yeh temporary hai. Har din ke saath aasaan hota jata hai.
Chewing Withdrawal Is Not the Same as Smoking Withdrawal
Let me speak to you one-to-one. Most withdrawal guides on the internet are written for cigarette smokers. But you chew. And chewers go through a few things that smokers don't talk about:
- The morning bowel habit: for years, the first pinch "started" the stomach.
- The empty mouth and jaw: your cheek held something many times a day.
- A very strong after-meal and after-chai urge.
So here is what many chewers usually notice in the first month. Every person is different, so please read this as a general picture, not a promise of exact days.
Days 1 to 3: The Restless Start
What you may feel: restlessness, irritability, short temper, an empty mouth, the hand going to the pocket again and again, and often difficulty passing motion in the morning. Some people feel a heavy head or low energy.
Why it happens: this is the chhota shaitaan, the body asking for the nicotine it got used to. It is the loudest now, but it is also the part that settles first.
What helps:
- Drink a glass of warm water as soon as you wake up, then walk for five minutes.
- Eat a simple fibre-rich breakfast (fruit, poha with vegetables, daliya) and drink water through the day.
- Keep a small box of roasted saunf only for these early days.
- When the urge comes, do the 3-3-3 breath: in for 3 seconds, hold for 3, out for 3, for two minutes.
Days 4 to 7: The Mouth and Mind Adjust
What you may feel: the body urge starts getting lighter, but you notice the moments: after lunch, at the paan shop, on the bike. Some people notice their mouth feels different, more sensitive to spicy food, or a little tingling where they kept the pinch. Sleep may be disturbed for a few nights.
What helps: avoid very spicy food for a while, rinse your mouth with plain water after meals, keep a fixed sleep time and reduce late-evening chai. Read more on mouth burning after quitting gutka.
Days 8 to 14: The Routine Tests You
What you may feel: the body is calmer now, but this is where many people go back. A stressful day at work, a friend offering "ek le le", a long drive, a family function. The urge doesn't come from the body anymore. It comes from the moment.
Why it happens: this is the bada shaitaan, the years-old routine in your mind. Chai means gutka. Tension means gutka. Friends mean gutka.
What helps: write your top 3 trigger moments and plan what you will do instead. Change the place where you have chai. Decide your answer for friends before you meet them: "Nahi yaar, chhod diya." If you slip once, don't say "sab khatam". Look at what triggered it and prepare for that moment.
Days 15 to 30: Things Start Feeling Normal
What many people notice: the morning stomach slowly finds its own rhythm, the jaw feels less restless, the taste of food feels clearer, and the mouth feels fresher. Many people also feel proud and lighter. Urges become rarer and shorter.
Be careful of one thought: "Ab toh control hai, ek se kuch nahi hoga." For most people, one pinch restarts the whole routine. Stay alert here.

When to See a Doctor
Withdrawal is uncomfortable, but it should not be severe. Please see a doctor if constipation continues for long or comes with pain or bleeding, if you feel very low or anxious, or if you notice an ulcer that has not healed in about two weeks, white or red patches, or difficulty opening your mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gutka chhodne ke baad kya hota hai?
Pehle kuch din bechaini, chidchidapan, jabde mein khalipan aur subah pet saaf hone mein dikkat ho sakti hai. Yeh aam taur par temporary hota hai. Dheere dheere muh ka swaad, neend aur energy behtar hone lagti hai.
How long do gutka withdrawal symptoms last?
For many chewers the body's restlessness is strongest in the first few days and eases over the next couple of weeks. The routine urges, after chai, after meals, at work, can come back for longer. Everyone is different, so I don't promise a fixed number of days.
Why can't I pass motion after quitting khaini?
Many people have used khaini or gutka every morning for years to 'start' the bowel. When it stops, the body needs some days to find its natural rhythm. Water, a fibre-rich breakfast, warm water on waking and a short walk usually help. If constipation continues for long, see a doctor.
Is head heaviness or dizziness normal after quitting gutka?
Some people feel a heavy head, low energy or mild dizziness in the first days as the body adjusts to no nicotine. It usually settles. If it is severe or does not improve, please see a doctor.
Why does my jaw feel restless after quitting gutka?
For years your jaw and cheek held something many times a day. When that stops, the mouth feels empty and restless. Drinking water, a small amount of roasted saunf for a short time, and the 3-3-3 breath help while this settles.
Is gutka withdrawal the same as cigarette withdrawal?
The nicotine part is similar, but chewers often face extra things smokers don't: the morning bowel habit, the empty mouth and jaw, and a stronger after-meal urge. That is why chewers need a plan made for chewing.
Kya gutka chhodne se neend nahi aati?
Kuch logon ko pehle kuch raaton mein neend mein dikkat hoti hai. Shaam ke baad chai kam karein, sone ka samay fix rakhein aur phone door rakhein. Yeh aam taur par kuch dino mein theek ho jata hai.
